Apple Picking in the Upstate: Orchards Close to Greenville, SC

September 30, 2025

When the leaves start to tinge orange, yellow, and red, you know that apple season is ripe for the picking in the Upstate. Honey Crisp, Granny Smith, Ambrosia: these forbidden fruits are even more tempting when you get to pick them yourself. Fortunately for those visiting Greenville, nearby Hendersonville hosts a wide variety of apple orchids to choose from. Visiting an orchard usually includes more activities than just picking apples, too. Depending on the location that you visit, you may even get the chance to pick other fruits, sample baked goods or coffee, run in a corn maze, and/or shoot apples from cannons. Some locations also include live music and children's activities. Check out our synopsis of Hendersonville apple orchard locations in order to plan your trip before the apples run out!

Arguably the most well known orchard in the area is Sky Top Orchard, which was voted #3 nationally and #1 Apple Orchard in NC (USA Today 10). There’s a reason that it is so beloved; the view of the orchard with the mountains in the background is unmatched. It spans more than 100 acres across Mt. McAlpine, meaning that they are less likely to run out of apples than other locations. Another highlight is the bakery, which is known for their delicious apple doughnuts and slushies. Additional activities include hayrides, gem mines, apple cannons, an animal barn, and playgrounds. Because it is such an iconic place to visit, Sky Top is usually packed during September- October, so it’s recommended that visitors visit during the week if they are looking for a more peaceful scene.

Next on the list is Justus Orchard, which has been operating for more than 100 years, spanning 5 generations. This family focused orchard also boasts beautiful mountain views across 75 acres. They grow and sell 19 different varieties of apples, both “we pick” and ‘you pick.” Farm fun includes hopping on a cow train, shooting a sasquatch with an apple cannon, and visiting the taproom/bakery. They are known for their fried apple pies and cider. Justus Orchard is quieter in the mornings, and somewhat busy in the afternoons, so be prepared for company.

Also located just outside Hendersonville, Stepp’s Hillcrest Orchard spans 40 acres and is smaller than the previous two locations, and is therefore less busy. They sell over 20 varieties of apples, and they also have grapes, pumpkins, and flowers available for picking. Get lost in their 5 acre corn maze or hitch a ride on their wagon train. Pets are welcome to join in the fun, too. Entry is free; only pay for what you “pick, buy, or do.” It’s the perfect place for a picnic in the sunshine.

Another excellent apple orchard with a corn maze in Hendersonville is Grandads Apples. There’s many things to do on this 120 acre orchard, such as visit the farm store, apple cannons, train, kids zone, and lake. They offer more than 30 different varieties, pre-picked or you-pick. Find your perfect Jack o lantern at the pumpkin patch, where photo opportunities abound. And be sure to check out the game store, where you can find jams, jellies, handmade goods, and fresh, apple themed delicacies like cider, pie, and doughnuts. Be sure to pack a picnic blanket and get cozy by the lake; it’s a dream come true!

Finally, the last recommendation for fall family fun at an orchard is at Jeter Mountain Farm. They are relatively new, having just opened in 2020. Not only do they offer over 20 varieties of we-pick/ you-pick apples, but they also have an on-site restaurant, bakery, taproom, coffee house, and market. They are trendy, and the decor is incredibly appealing. It is not the cheapest option, but it sure is modern.

There are so many orchards in the Hendersonville area; these are just a few locations that are breathtaking and just plain fun. Treat yourself to apples and apple sweets, like cider and doughnuts. It’s the best way to enjoy fall!
