Check out The Local 5

Whether you’re visiting for the first time or have spent years in the Greenville area, The Local 5 Newsletter is your one stop destination to find out what you don’t want to miss this weekend in the Upstate.

Every Thursday, we will highlight our ‘top 5 musts’ that will include everything from restaurants, activities, parks, concerts and festivals that are all right here in beautiful Greenville, SC.

One

This is your last weekend of the year to experience Holidays at the Zoo, where individuals can stroll through the Greenville Zoo amongst twinkling lights. Enjoy Christmas music, visits with Santa, and holiday displays throughout the zoo. Say “hello” to Kendi the giraffe and Parker the African Painted Dog. Tickets are $14 for non members online. Be sure to check out the concession stand for hot cocoa and marshmallows to roast over the fire. It’s a simple yet magical experience.

Two

Pickleball is popular for a reason: friendly competition, plenty of laughter, and quality time together. Now, pickleball can be a real party thanks to the Park After Dark at PKL. Every Friday, players can enjoy live music, DJs, glow lights, and food specials, along with their pickleball matches. Tickets are $15.

Three

If you like live music, you may like the hot spot Smiley’s on the Roxx. Located on the West End of Greenville, SC, it is an eclectic spot that serves drinks, burgers, and quality entertainment. They’ve got a packed lineup this weekend, including Marvin King Revue, FUNCLE, Cody Blackwell, Acid Reflux, and more. See the link for details. Each artist brings something new to the table: you never know which one will strike a cord.

Four

You gotta love science! Especially with places like the Roper Mountain Science Center, which makes science fun. The Greenville County public schools utilize the center for much of the school year, but the center is open to the public during its Afternoon Explorations series. On Thursdays and Fridays from 1:30pm-5pm, individuals can check out various exhibits, such as the Environmental Science & Sustainability Building and Harrison Hall of Natural Science. It feels like visiting a small zoo because there are a large number of reptiles and aquatic animals. There’s also a small history farm, dinosaur trail, and playground to explore on the grounds. Tickets are only $8 for adults and $7 for children. What’s not to love?

FIve

Our highlighted restaurant of the week is a local favorite: Fork and Plough. This Southern eatery prides themselves on only using fresh, in-season ingredients. Additionally, there’s always something new to try because their menu changes twice a week, typically offering comfort food items like hamburgers, seafood, and chicken pot pie. Items are also available for purchase at their market and butchery. Reservations are not required but are recommended for the best experience.
