Whether you’re visiting for the first time or have spent years in the Greenville area, The Local 5 Newsletter is your one stop destination to find out what you don’t want to miss this weekend in the Upstate.
Every Thursday, we will highlight our ‘top 5 musts’ that will include everything from restaurants, activities, parks, concerts and festivals that are all right here in beautiful Greenville, SC.

Lights, camera, action! If looking for free and fun entertainment in downtown Greenville this weekend, check out the SC New Play Festival. On August 7th-10th, various theatres throughout Greenville will host a series of new performances and musicals, featuring titles like “Merlin Returns, Starring Piff the Magic Dragon,” “The Break,” “Mariah, or the Passageway,” “My Favorite Sociopath,” and “The Drought Girl.” Plays are free to attend, but they are selling out fast, so be sure to reserve your spot today!
Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails are back for a whirlwind adventure in Sonic 3, which will be shown outside during Greer’s Moonlight Movies Series. Greer’s Moonlight Movies series occurs every Thursday night during the summer and includes pre-show activities for kids of all ages. Food and beverages are available for purchase, or feel free to pack snacks. Additionally, it’s a good idea to bring a camping chair or a blanket because seating fills up quickly. You don’t need to wait until the weekend for a night out; make Thursday the new Friday with Moonlight Movies.

Life is short. It’s even shorter when one is born with a rare genetic condition that causes rapid aging, like in Kimberly Akimbo’s case. The Tony Award winning show, Kimberly Akimbo, features the struggles and triumphs of a 16 year old girl, whose fictional condition causes her to appear to be in her 70’s. Despite its serious and weighty themes, The New Yorker also deemed it, a “howlingly funny heartbreaker of a show.” The show has a script written by David Lindsay-Abraire (Shrek), score produced by Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home), and choreography directed by Jessica Stone. Tickets are on sale now, starting at $55 at the Peace Center from August 5th-10th.
The “rock and soul duo” Sirsy is headlining at Fireforge Crafted Beer this Friday night from 7-9pm. They have played more than 250 shows per year and participated alongside artists such as Grace Potter, Maroon 5, Train, and more. Lead singer/drummer Melanie and bass player Rich Libutti love to entertain the crowd with their zany sound and hilarious stories. It’s always a good time at a Sirsy concert!

The Radio Room is more than just a dive bar; it’s also a hopping venue that typically hosts 15-20 shows or events a month. They treat customers like family, and it's a place where locals and tourists alike can let their hair down and enjoy quality entertainment. Often, they offer karaoke, trivia, book signings, concerts, and dances: it’s all on their booked social calendar. Notably, on August 7th Ben Nichols (of Lucero) will be playing with Cory Cranan. Then, on August 8th, Erin Kinsey will be performing with Kaleb Sanders. They also have a fully stocked kitchen and bar to enjoy. What’s not to love?
